Old clothes/personal items stuck in customs for 9 days

The pickup went smoothly, but when the package arrived at customs, the drama began:
First I get an e-mail from DHL, asking for a copy of my airline ticket, travel documents, passport, and a declaration that the contents were personal items. I then called them at DHL and was told that I need to send an e-mail to them stating that I need to claim "Verzollung zum Freienverkehr" and that I had no proof of payment (obviously, all old clothes), and a list of the items and their claimed value. During the next following 7 e-mails I had to also send some other random forms, and in the end they wanted my home address, to show it wasn't for work purposes... like my job somehow requires my old clothes? Finally, got it 12 days after the pickup (advertised as 1-6 day shipping).
Long story short, if you are looking to send a package of personal items from the US to Germany and you don't want a headache don't.

Dear Eric,
I'm sorry for what happenned with your shipment. By experience I can tell you that the courier cannot be held responsible for the customs process. Usually it gets smoothly to clear personnal items from customs in any country. Germany is a litttle more drastic concerning the content of the parcels. It's not the majority for the cases.
